The jewellery market in India has been rocked by a spate of thefts of the precious metals, prompting authorities to launch a nationwide crackdown.

A report by the Times of India revealed that a jeweller in the western city of Amritsar, located in Uttar Pradesh, was recently the victim of an armed robbery.

The report claimed that a group of armed men demanded money from the jeweller before leaving.

“A few minutes later the group came back and started attacking the jewellery shop and the store manager.

The shop manager was severely injured and had to be hospitalized,” the report quoted the jeweller’s manager as saying.

“We are working with the police and are in talks with the local authorities to get the perpetrators arrested.

The jewellery owner has been threatened with legal action.”

Police in the state of Uttar Pradesh have not yet issued any official statement about the incident.
